Radiculopathy

Your back is integral to your overall health and well-being, enabling you to engage in work, recreation, and everyday activities. At Pinnacle Chiropractic and Rehab, we endeavor to provide those living in the West Fargo and Fargo, ND area with chiropractor services.

In the common vernacular, people may refer to radiculopathy as a pinched nerve, but more specifically, it is when the root of a nerve experiences compression. This condition can sometimes result from a herniation in the disk or can be associated with spondylosis.

.

Sometimes a traumatic event causes a degenerative spine condition, but this is not always so. Tumors and cysts can also be the explanation, though this happens less often, or your vertebra may be out of alignment.

Back Pain and Other Symptoms

Radiculopathy can occur in any nerve root but is particularly common in the lower back region and neck. Patients are likely to feel back pain or irritation that radiates down to their shoulders and arms or from the lumbar area into the buttock or the leg. In addition, there may be tingling sensations in the extremities, such as hands or feet.

This can also create weakness in the grip that will cause a person to drop things easily or to have trouble lifting items. Those whose issues extend into the legs may have difficulty walking due to a lack of strength.

Problems often tend to be concentrated on one side of the body in general, which can be exacerbated by jobs requiring hours of sitting. Likewise, occupations that require you to be on your feet or to walk for extended periods can also negatively affect the pain this diagnosis generates. Coughing or sneezing can sometimes cause sharp discomfort.

Less Common Radiculopathy Symptoms

Sometimes the nerves that control the functions of the bowels can also become compressed, which can lead to incontinence or a reduced ability to regulate one's evacuation. Thankfully, this is a symptom that does not occur as regularly.

When to Seek Chiropractic Help

If you are having symptoms of radiculopathy going from your neck into your hand/arms or from your low back into your feet/legs contact your West Fargo, Fargo ND chiropractor. Chiropractic care has been recommended as a first line therapy for back pain and radiculopathy. Chiropractic care is a great hands-on treatment option that does not use medication, injections, or surgery.

If you engage in strength training, inquire about how to observe proper form and avoid excessively repetitive motions if required by your occupation. Poor posture can impact your back, as can being overweight or having a hereditary predisposition for radiculopathy. Contact sports can also be a risk factor.
